Discarded fish on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: influence of season on fatty acids profiles

This work focused on determining the fatty acid (FA) composition of commonly discarded fish Spanish Mediterranean coast in winter and summer to assess their potential use as raw sources very long-chain polyunsaturated acids (VLCPUFAs). Total n-3 VLCPUFA content significantly varies depending capture season, values were higher for Pomadasys incisus (1.36 g/100 g), Chelidonichthys lucerna (1.67 g) Trachinus draco (2.04 while Pagellus acarne had larger PUFA amounts (3.89 g). Generally most species, monounsaturated FA, eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3) total FA summer, both fraction DHA winter. Knowledge these changes allows processes proper valuable be adjusted. The herein studied could generally considered VLCPUFAs sources.
